“Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD Almighty” (Zech 4:6). The setting of these often-quoted words has to do with the rebuilding of a ruined temple. The details are obscure. But the idea stands on its own.
Like a proverb, the same thought shows up in the lyrics of a song. Psalm 127:1 has reminded every generation since Zechariah that, “Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.”
Seems to me that there’s something wonderful about timeless reminders of what it means to learn from the rubble of our own efforts to build a life, home, temple, or community.
